Career change into entrepreneurship: securing the move
Career change into entrepreneurship in France: capped CPF funding since February 2026, professional transition project, testing in an incubator or through wage portage, and a transition budget. The sequence to change occupation without draining your reserves.

Changing careers and starting a business at the same time means taking on two risks at once: learning a new trade and facing a new market. Most career changes that fail are not short of motivation, they are short of sequencing: people resign before validating, train without knowing who will pay, and use up their unemployment rights during the research phase. This guide sets out an order of steps to fund the transition and test the project in France without burning through your reserves.
Quick answer. A career change into entrepreneurship is secured in four stages: clarify the project (skills assessment, with CPF funding capped at €1,600 since 20 February 2026), fund the training (CPF or a professional transition project), test the activity (business incubator under a CAPE, or wage portage) and set a personal transition budget before leaving your job.
What is an entrepreneurial career change, and why is it riskier than a standard business creation?#
An entrepreneurial career change (reconversion entrepreneuriale) is a change of occupation in which the new activity is carried out as a business owner rather than as an employee. It differs from starting a business within your own field: an employee who becomes a founder in their existing sector, a path covered in our article from employee to founder, builds on a network and a skill set already recognised. Someone changing careers has to acquire the skill, build credibility and find clients.
This double learning curve mechanically lengthens the time before the first income. You therefore need to reason in terms of a timeline, not an intention:
- Skills risk: being able to practise the new trade at a level clients will pay for.
- Market risk: checking that clients will pay, at what price and how quickly.
- Personal cash risk: staying financially afloat during the two previous phases.
At the firm, we advise tackling these three risks in that order, and never making the same savings carry all three at once.
Do you need a skills assessment before switching to entrepreneurship?#
A skills assessment (bilan de compétences) is not required to start a business, but it is useful when the career change project is still vague or when you are torn between several occupations. A skills assessment is a guidance service lasting at most 24 hours, spread over several weeks or months, which analyses your skills, aptitudes and motivations in order to define a professional project.
Since 20 February 2026, the 2026 Finance Act has capped at €1,600 the amount of personal training account (compte personnel de formation, CPF) rights that can be used for a skills assessment, and makes this funding conditional on no other funded assessment in the previous five years, according to Mon Compte Formation. The assessment can be carried out outside working hours without informing your employer, according to Service-Public.fr.
If your project is already well defined, a full assessment often duplicates work you have already done. A career change test offers a first screening, and career development advice (conseil en évolution professionnelle, CEP), a free guidance service, helps structure the project. The CEP is also a mandatory step if you are aiming for a resignation for retraining.
How do you fund career change training: CPF or a professional transition project?#
The personal training account (CPF) funds short, certified training courses, while the professional transition project (projet de transition professionnelle, PTP) funds longer training with all or part of your pay maintained during your absence. The choice depends on the length of the training and on whether you need to keep receiving a salary.
The CPF for training in business creation or takeover#
Since 16 February 2025, only business creation and takeover training courses leading to a certification registered in the RNCP (national register of professional certifications) or the Répertoire spécifique (RS, specific register) are eligible for the CPF, according to Mon Compte Formation. Since 20 February 2026, courses preparing for a Répertoire spécifique certification are funded up to €1,500 of CPF rights, while RNCP certifications remain uncapped.
The CPF holder must pay a mandatory financial contribution of €150 since 1 April 2026 (Decree No. 2026-234 of 30 March 2026), up from €100 when it was introduced on 2 May 2024. Jobseekers are exempt, as are holders whose training is topped up by their employer or an OPCO (skills operator). The training schemes for becoming a business owner are detailed in our article on business creation training.
The professional transition project for changing occupation#
The professional transition project (PTP) is a form of CPF use that allows an employee to take leave from their job to follow certified training in order to change occupation, with funding decided by the regional association Transitions Pro. An employee on a permanent contract (CDI) must have at least 24 months of salaried seniority, consecutive or not, including 12 months with the current employer, according to the French Ministry of Labour.
The leave request must reach the employer no later than 120 days before the training starts if the absence exceeds six months, and 60 days before in other cases. Transitions Pro funds tuition costs and pay according to a scale based on the reference salary and the length of the training: check the exact amount in the committee's decision before building your budget.
| Scheme | Purpose | Key conditions | Cap or out-of-pocket cost | Effective date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skills assessment (CPF) | Clarify the project | No other funded assessment within 5 years | €1,600 of CPF rights maximum | 20 February 2026 |
| Business creation or takeover training (CPF) | Train for the role of business owner | RNCP or RS certification | RS: €1,500 maximum; RNCP: uncapped | 16 February 2025 (RNCP/RS), 20 February 2026 (RS cap) |
| CPF holder contribution | Out-of-pocket cost on each course | Unless exempt (jobseeker, top-up funding) | €150 per course | 1 April 2026 |
| Professional transition project | Long training to change occupation | 24 months' seniority incl. 12 with the employer (CDI) | Pay covered according to the Transitions Pro scale | Rule in force |
| CAPE in a business incubator | Test the activity before registration | Written contract with a support organisation | 12 months, renewable twice | Rule in force |
Our view. The PTP is the most protective scheme for a career change, because it separates the learning phase from the creation phase: you train while remaining an employee, without using up savings or unemployment rights. It does, however, require four to six months of advance planning. If your new occupation requires a certification, start there.
How can you test your activity before leaving your job?#
Testing your activity means invoicing real clients within a temporary legal framework, before registering a business and committing your own funds. Three legal frameworks allow this test, with different levels of protection.
- The business incubator and the CAPE: the business project support contract (contrat d'appui au projet d'entreprise, CAPE) is a written contract under which a support organisation provides the project holder with a programme to prepare the business creation; it is concluded for up to 12 months, renewable twice, i.e. 36 months at most, according to Bpifrance Création. The beneficiary is not an employee of the incubator (couveuse) but is covered by the general social security scheme.
- Wage portage (portage salarial): the consultant invoices assignments through a portage company that employs them; they keep employee social protection in exchange for management fees. How it works and its limits are covered in our article on wage portage as a springboard.
- A side activity as a micro-entrepreneur: if your employment contract allows it (exclusivity clause, duty of loyalty, non-compete), you can start on a small scale while keeping your salary.
| Situation | Suitable testing framework | Point to watch |
|---|---|---|
| High-expertise occupation, B2B assignments | Wage portage | Management fees must be built into the price; eligible activities are limited |
| Commercial or craft activity to validate | Incubator under a CAPE | Limited places; apply early for support |
| Still employed, small-volume test | Micro-enterprise as a side activity | Re-read your employment contract clauses before starting |
| Project requiring heavy investment | Market study then financial forecast before any test | Do not commit to a lease or equipment before validation |
The underestimated risk. Many career changers test technical feasibility ("I can do this") and forget to test the price. A useful test tells you how much a client is willing to pay, how long they take to decide, and how much non-billable time you spend winning an assignment. Without these three figures, the forecast is only a hypothesis.
Market validation follows a method, described in our article on validating your idea before launching: client interviews, pre-sales, a minimum offer. In a career change, the stake is also to check that you will be seen as credible in your new occupation.
How do you build a personal transition budget?#
The personal transition budget is the amount needed to cover your personal expenses between your last salary and the point at which the business pays you regularly. It is calculated from your actual expenses, not from your past income.
- List your fixed personal expenses over twelve months: housing, loans, insurance, family spending, and taxes still due on the previous year.
- Estimate the time until the first stable income, adding the length of the training and a prudent sales lead time (in a career change, the start is often slower than expected).
- Identify your transition resources: maintained salary (PTP, side activity), the return-to-work allowance (allocation d'aide au retour à l'emploi, ARE) if you are entitled to it, your partner's income.
- Separate your emergency savings from your capital contribution: emergency savings cover your personal expenses, the contribution funds the business; mixing the two weakens both.
- Choose between keeping the ARE and taking the ARCE once your rights are open: the business creation or takeover aid (aide à la reprise ou à la création d'entreprise, ARCE) pays 60% of your remaining rights in two instalments, the second half six months after the first, according to France Travail. The combination rules are detailed in our article on combining ARE with starting a business.
In practice. At the firm, we advise against starting the market research phase while drawing on the ARE: these rights are more valuable during the commercial ramp-up, when the business exists but does not yet pay you. Ideally, validation happens while you are still employed, and the ARE supports the first months of real activity.
Your personal forecast and the business forecast should be built together: this is the purpose of our business plan and financial forecast support.
How do you leave your job at the right time?#
The right time to leave your job is when the training is completed, the market has been tested and the transition budget is covered, not when motivation is at its peak. The exit route, for its part, determines your rights: simple resignation, resignation for retraining with a Transitions Pro certificate, mutually agreed termination (rupture conventionnelle) or leave to start a business.
These four options are compared in detail in our article on leaving a permanent job to start a business: we will not repeat them here. Simply bear in mind that resignation for retraining imposes a strict order (career development advice before resigning, then certification that the project is "genuine and serious") and that a premature resignation closes that door.
Points to watch. Unemployment insurance and CPF rules changed several times in 2025 and 2026 (CPF caps on 20 February 2026, holder contribution on 1 April 2026, benefit duration after a mutually agreed termination on 1 September 2026). Check the rule that applies on the date your own contract ends, not on the date you started preparing the project.
What timeline should you plan for an entrepreneurial career change?#
An entrepreneurial career change generally requires several quarters of preparation before leaving salaried employment, because training, testing and building the budget follow one another. No legal text sets a duration: the timeline depends mainly on the training required by the new occupation and on the time needed to sign your first clients.
Checklist before leaving your job:
- Project clarified (skills assessment, test or career development advice)
- Training funding secured or training completed
- First paying clients or pre-sales signed within a testing framework
- Selling price and client decision time measured
- Personal transition budget costed over at least twelve months
- Emergency savings kept separate from the capital contribution
- Exit route chosen and its conditions checked for the planned date
- Choice of legal structure prepared with a chartered accountant (expert-comptable)
The legal structure comes last: it is chosen according to the target income, the social protection you want and how you intend to use the ARE. If you are keeping an existing activity, our article on running a micro-enterprise alongside a company sets out the points to watch. Local support available is listed in the guide to support for entrepreneurs in Paris.
Key takeaways#
- An entrepreneurial career change combines skills risk, market risk and cash risk: deal with them in that order.
- Since 20 February 2026, the CPF funds a skills assessment up to €1,600 and a Répertoire spécifique certification up to €1,500.
- The mandatory CPF holder contribution has been €150 since 1 April 2026, unless exempt.
- The professional transition project lets you train while still being paid, provided you file the request 60 to 120 days in advance.
- Test the price and sales cycle in an incubator (CAPE, 36 months at most), through wage portage or as a side activity before resigning.
- Keep your ARE for the commercial ramp-up rather than the research phase.
Frequently asked questions
How do you succeed in a career change into entrepreneurship?+
A successful entrepreneurial career change follows a sequence: clarify the project, train for the new occupation, test the market with real clients, then leave your job with a costed transition budget. The most common mistake is reversing the order by resigning before confirming that clients will pay the expected price.
How do you fund a career change into entrepreneurship?+
Funding usually combines the CPF for certified training, the professional transition project for longer training with pay maintained, then the ARE or ARCE after the business is created if you have rights. Since 1 April 2026, each course funded through the CPF leaves 150 euros for the holder to pay, unless an exemption applies.
Do you need a skills assessment to start a business?+
No, a skills assessment is not required to start a business. It is useful if you are hesitating between several occupations or are unsure about your transferable skills. Since 20 February 2026, the CPF funds it up to 1,600 euros, provided you have not had another funded assessment in the previous five years.
How long should you allow to change careers and start a business?+
No legal text sets a duration. In practice, you need to add up the length of the training required by the new occupation, the commercial testing period and the time needed to build your transition budget. For a professional transition project, the request to the employer must already be made 60 to 120 days before the training starts.
Can you test your activity without setting up a business?+
Yes. A business incubator offers a business project support contract, concluded for up to twelve months and renewable twice, which lets you invoice without registering a company. Wage portage also lets you carry out assignments while being employed by a portage company, for intellectual service activities.
Can you resign to change careers and receive unemployment benefit?+
Yes, through resignation for retraining, provided you request career development advice before resigning and obtain certification from Transitions Pro that the project is genuine and serious. Conditions on prior length of employment also apply. A resignation made before these steps does not open entitlement on this basis.
