Accounting apprenticeship: the complete guide to success in 2026

Are you considering an accounting apprenticeship and wondering if it's the right path to enter the profession? Good news: in 2026, the work-study program remains the most effective way to access positions as accountant, firm collaborator or payroll manager. Between theoretical training and professional immersion, this device allows you to obtain a recognized diploma while developing directly exploitable skills.

What is a work-study program in accounting? It's a program that alternates periods at a training center and periods in a company or chartered accounting firm. The apprentice signs a paid employment contract, benefits from full social security coverage and ultimately obtains the same diploma as a standard initial training, with professional experience on top.

Why choose accounting work-study rather than standard training?

Accounting is a profession where practice makes all the difference. No lecture can replace concrete exposure to the tax calendar, monthly closing operations, customer relations or mastery of accounting software.

The advantages of work-study training are numerous:

  • Professional experience from the start: you graduate with a real CV, not just an academic background;
  • Remuneration during training: the apprenticeship contract is a real employment contract with a salary;
  • Training costs covered: the OPCO finances the pedagogical cost of your training;
  • Accelerated professional integration: the majority of accounting apprentices receive a job offer at the end of their contract;
  • Professional network: you build relationships in the sector from your training.

Apprenticeship or professionalization: which contract to choose?

The legal framework distinguishes two types of work-study contracts, each responding to different situations.

The apprenticeship contract

This is the most common contract in accounting apprenticeship. It is aimed at young people aged 16 to 29 and prepares a diploma or professional title (BTS CG, BUT GEA, DCG, etc.).

Key points of the apprenticeship contract in 2026:

  • duration: 6 months to 3 years, depending on the diploma;
  • remuneration: percentage of SMIC (€1,766.92 gross per month in 2026), varying by age and year of contract execution;
  • employer cost: greatly reduced thanks to public aid and exemption from social contributions;
  • exceptional aid: decree no. 2026-168 of March 6, 2026 renewed an apprentice hiring aid, up to €6,000 for employers (source: Service Public Entreprendre).

The professionalization contract

Less common in accounting but just as relevant, it targets 16-25 year olds as well as job seekers aged 26 and over. It makes it possible to obtain a recognized qualification (diploma, title, CQP).

When to prefer this contract?

  • professional retraining towards accounting professions;
  • skills development for an already employed salaried worker;
  • public aged 26 and over not eligible for the apprenticeship contract.

What remuneration for an accounting apprentice in 2026?

Remuneration in accounting work-study depends on three criteria: the age of the apprentice, the year of contract execution and the SMIC in force.

For example, for an apprenticeship contract in 2026:

  • under 18 years: 27% of SMIC in 1st year (approx. €477 gross/month), 37% in 2nd year, 53% in 3rd year;
  • 18-20 years: 43% of SMIC in 1st year (approx. €760 gross/month), 51% in 2nd year, 67% in 3rd year;
  • 21-25 years: 53% of SMIC in 1st year (approx. €936 gross/month), 61% in 2nd year, 78% in 3rd year;
  • 26 years and over: 100% of SMIC (i.e. €1,766.92 gross minimum).

These amounts may be higher if the company or firm's collective agreement provides for more favorable provisions. Some chartered accounting firms offer remuneration scales above the legal minimum to attract the best profiles.

What pace of work-study to expect in accounting?

The pace of work-study varies depending on the diploma and training organization. In accounting, the most common configurations are:

  • 1 week company / 1 week training center: demanding pace but very formative, common in BTS CG;
  • 3 weeks company / 1 week training: more practice-oriented pace, frequent in DCG;
  • 2 to 3 days per week in company: progressive formula, suitable for beginners.

Hayot Expertise advice: never underestimate the impact of pace on your success. A pace too heavy in company can compromise course monitoring. Conversely, too little time in the firm limits the acquisition of professional reflexes. The ideal balance depends on your initial level and your ability to adapt.

What training is accessible in accounting work-study?

Accounting work-study covers a wide range of training levels:

Bac to bac+2 level

  • BTS Comptabilite et Gestion (CG): the most common entry point, in 2 years;
  • BTS SME Management: oriented towards management and current management.

Bac+3 level

  • BUT Business and Administration Management (GEA): versatile course with Accounting, Financial and Tax Management option;
  • Professional License Accounting Professions: one-year specialization after bac+2.

Bac+5 level

  • DCG (Accounting and Management Diploma): national diploma in 3 years, accessible through work-study in many centers;
  • DSCG (Higher Diploma in Accounting and Management): master's level, the royal road to the chartered accountant DEC.

How to find an accounting work-study program?

Searching for an accounting work-study contract requires method. Here are the most effective channels:

  • Chartered accounting firms: they massively recruit apprentices, especially during periods of high activity (tax season, annual closings);
  • Corporate accounting departments: SMEs, mid-caps and large groups all need accounting support;
  • Dedicated platforms: La Bonne Alternance (public service), Indeed, LinkedIn, specialized accounting job boards;
  • School networks: many training programs have active partnerships with employers;
  • Forums and open days: direct opportunities to meet recruiters.

Qualities recruiters look for:

  • seriousness and regularity in work;
  • basics of numerical logic and organization;
  • quality of written and oral expression;
  • appetite for accounting tools and digital;
  • ability to progress over time and accept gradual increase in workload.

Hayot Expertise advice: in an accounting apprenticeship, technique counts, but reliability counts even more. A punctual, organized and curious profile often progresses faster than a brilliant but scattered profile. Don't hesitate to highlight your internships, volunteer work or personal projects that demonstrate these qualities.

Aids for employers who recruit in accounting work-study

If you are an accounting professional considering welcoming an apprentice, the real cost is well below the gross salary announced:

  • Total exemption from employer contributions on the apprentice's remuneration (within the limit of 79% of SMIC);
  • Exceptional hiring aid: up to €6,000 for contracts signed since March 8, 2026 (decree no. 2026-168);
  • Training cost coverage by the OPCO Competences (OPCO EP for chartered accounting firms);
  • Additional aid possible depending on the region and the employer's situation.

Mistakes to avoid in accounting work-study

Certain errors recur frequently and can compromise the experience:

  • Choosing without verifying the content of missions: an apprentice who only does data entry for 6 months does not progress. Demand a clear training plan;
  • Underestimating the pace of closings: in a firm, end-of-month and end-of-year periods are intense. Anticipate the workload;
  • Neglecting supervision: without an involved tutor, the apprentice is left to their own devices. Check that your apprenticeship supervisor is available;
  • Thinking that work-study replaces theoretical fundamentals: courses remain essential. Practice complements theory, it does not replace it;
  • Waiting until the last moment to search: the best positions leave as early as spring for a September start.

Foire aux questions

What is the minimum salary for an accounting apprentice in 2026?+
The salary depends on age and contract year. For a 20-year-old apprentice in their first year, remuneration is approximately €760 gross per month (43% of SMIC 2026). An apprentice aged 26 and over receives at least 100% of SMIC, i.e. €1,766.92 gross. Some accounting firm collective agreements provide for higher amounts.
Can you do an accounting work-study program after 30?+
The apprenticeship contract is reserved for those under 30. However, the professionalization contract remains accessible from age 26, with no upper age limit. It also makes it possible to prepare recognized accounting diplomas and constitutes an excellent retraining path towards accounting professions.
What financial aid is available for an employer hiring an accounting apprentice?+
Since March 8, 2026, the exceptional aid for hiring an apprentice is a maximum of €6,000 (decree no. 2026-168). Added to this are the exemption of employer contributions, the coverage of training costs by the OPCO and possible regional aid. The net cost for the employer is therefore much lower than the gross salary paid.
Which diploma to prepare in work-study to work in accounting?+
The BTS Comptabilite et Gestion (CG) is the most accessible and widespread diploma for starting out. For positions with higher responsibility, the DCG (license level) in work-study is an excellent choice. The DSCG (master's level) opens the way to the chartered accountant DEC, the highest diploma in the profession.
What does a typical day look like for an apprentice in an accounting firm?+
During normal periods, the apprentice alternates between entering accounting entries, bank reconciliations, preparing VAT declarations and assisting senior collaborators. During closing periods, the pace intensifies with the preparation of balance sheets and tax returns. Time at the training center consolidates theoretical knowledge related to missions carried out in the company.
